Are You Lukewarm?

“Lukewarm people don’t really want to be saved from their sin; they want only to be saved from the penalty of their sin. They don’t genuinely hate sin and aren’t truly sorry for it; they’re merely sorry because God is going to punish them. Lukewarm people don’t really believe that this new life Jesus offers is better than the old sinful one." - Francis Chan, Crazy Love,  p.70

That is a bold statement and I, like many others, enjoy this thought provoking quote. I would, however, modify it slightly as follows below. This restatement more accurately describes what happens on the front-line of the war between sin and obedience. It also let’s us open up discussion about the cycle of sin.

Proverbs 20:1 Drinking

Proverbs 20:1 Wine produces mockers; alcohol leads to brawls. Those led astray by drink cannot be wise.

Proverbs 23:19 My child, listen and be wise: Keep your heart on the right course.
20 Do not carouse with drunkards or feast with gluttons, 21 for they are on their way to poverty, and too much sleep clothes them in rags.

Proverbs 18 Words

Wise words are like deep waters; wisdom flows from the wise like a bubbling brook.

Fools’ words get them into constant quarrels; they are asking for a beating.
The mouths of fools are their ruin; they trap themselves with their lips.

Spouting off before listening to the facts is both shameful and foolish.

Wise words satisfy like a good meal; the right words bring satisfaction. The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences. (Proverbs 18:4, 6, 7, 13, 20, 21 NLT)

Acts 23: 6-8 Hope in Ressurrection

Paul realized that some members of the high council were Sadducees and some were Pharisees, so he shouted, “Brothers, I am a Pharisee, as were my ancestors! And I am on trial because my hope is in the resurrection of the dead!” This divided the council—the Pharisees against the Sadducees— for the Sadducees say there is no resurrection or angels or spirits, but the Pharisees believe in all of these. (Acts 23:6-8 NLT)

Proverbs 16: Making Plans

Proverbs 16:1 The plans of the mind and orderly thinking belong to man, but from the Lord comes the [wise] answer of the tongue.

9 A man’s mind plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps and makes them sure.

25 There is a way that seems right to a man and appears straight before him, but at the end of it is the way of death.

Proverbs 10:19-21 Words

Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut. The words of the godly are like sterling silver; the heart of a fool is worthless. The words of the godly encourage many, but fools are destroyed by their lack of common sense. (Proverbs 10:19-21 NLT)

Proverbs 9: 7-9 Who to Rebuke

Proverbs 9:7 Anyone who rebukes a mocker will get an insult in return. Anyone who corrects the wicked will get hurt.
So don’t bother correcting mockers; they will only hate you.
But correct the wise, and they will love you.
Instruct the wise, and they will be even wiser.
Teach the righteous, and they will learn even more.
