Finding a Church Home

My wife and I had been looking for a church in our area to attend that would become our church home for as long as we live in Indy. We finally found one on Sunday and are so thankful/excited. It got me thinking though of what a person should look for in a church and how many people; either don’t go, or don’t get what they need from a church.

So what do you look for in a church? There are so many possibilities today. You start with denomination, which is a sticking point for many people. Add in music, preaching, small groups, child care, the people themselves, the building, and much more; now you are left with a pretty difficult task to find a church that matches everything you want. So what is the right answer? What is the absolute most important thing you need in your church?

I believe the only thing a church must have is simple; a pastor who preaches with the authority of God. Say that any way you want, that is what everyone needs. This is a person who speaks with wisdom and power. If you have a heart for God, you will feel the Holy Spirit move in the service. It’s okay if the message challenges you, it is in fact a great thing if it does that. These preachers are getting harder to find, but they are still out there. They are not afraid of the Gospel, or offending anyone when dealing with the reality of sin and Satan. All other perks at a new church should be less of a priority than Godly leadership.

Christians have gotten a timid view of the church today. You have those who stay at a spiritually dead church because they have always been there, that’s where their friends are, or it doesn’t challenge them. On the other hand, you have those who church hop for the silliest reasons; from not liking music to hearing things that might make them feel bad. Ask yourself, “why are you going to church?” God will not be fooled, and you cannot follow Christ halfway. Going because you think it “looks good” to Christ, will get you nowhere.

So you get it, you have decided to go for the right reasons. That’s the first step. Now find a pastor who is preaching with authority, step two. Next, get engaged. Be a part of your church. Typically God will call you to serve in some way, even if it seems small to you. Go on Sunday to learn, grow, and worship the Lord; that is the reason for church. Be serious about this, going to church should not be some dull routine. It should be a predetermined decision, that you are committed to. Invite others to church, don’t be shy. If you saw the greatest movie in the world you would invite those you care about to watch it right? Well you should think highly of the message of church, and it’s ridiculously more important for those you love to meet Jesus than to see some movie. This is as important as it gets folks
